If You Cannot DWG It......., Then DXF it

Working with very large DWG files has been somewhat a difficult area for Bricscad. While things are really getting better with each update, there is still room for improvement. And, a solution as well...

We got to experience some of this today when a user sent me a 125 MB ASCII file (containing 2.2 million 3D points of information) and asked it to be imported into Bricscad in reasonable time and effort. We ran our GeoTools point/line GT_IMPEX in Bricscad and brought in the data. We did and ZOOM EXTENTS and everything looked good. In fact, too good to be true. We had 2.2 million POINTs on the Bricscad drawing editor and we were able to pan / zoom / list / query and do everything with the points.

The next logical step was to save the drawing. When we tried that, it would not save. There was a write error. No matter what, the error still persisted. I have brought this to the notice of Bricsys support and a fix would soon find its way into Bricscad. In the meantime, I tried exporting the data as DXF and it created a DXF file in no time. Suddenly, size did not matter. Large data-sets got DXFed in no time. We suggested this to the user and they found it an acceptable workaround.

So, the purpose of writing this post is to convey an all-important message, a bye-pass just in case: If you cannot DWG-save large data- sets in Bricscad, DXF-save it. The DXF format is ASCII, well- documented, as authentic as DWG and opens/saves as good as DWG, and you can still import/export the same into AutoCAD and other programs
like it were DWG.
