*** Intergraph® CADWorx® Plant 2017 R1 now runs on the AutoCAD® and BricsCAD® platforms

As we begin the new financial year in India from April, the season of new software releases continue.

Intergraph® Process, Power & Marine (PP&M), part of Hexagon and the world’s leading provider of enterprise engineering software to the process, power and marine industries, together with Bricsys®, worldwide provider of the BricsCAD® DWG platform, last week announced the release of Intergraph CADWorx® Plant 2017 R1.

This new release includes the most complete DWG file-based range of tools for effective plant design and offers unparalleled flexibility and collaboration, including the option to run on the AutoCAD® or BricsCAD platform.

CADWorkx features include plant design automation, intelligent drawing tools, and database connectivity.

Clients have requested other design platform options, and we are ready to deliver. Our valued customers now have the ability to run the latest release of CADWorx on their choice of BricsCAD or AutoCAD platforms.
--Rick Allen, president of Intergraph CADWorx & Analysis Solutions

By including the ability to choose the design platform, CADWorx continues to expand upon and provide powerful and adaptive tools that enable quick and easy creation of fully intelligent 3D plant models. CADWorx continues to provide users with all the familiar benefits, ensuring every plant designer and engineer has the tools they need to complete projects efficiently.

CADWorx gives the same high degree of performance on both BricsCAD and AutoCAD platforms. Users will like the cost and the flexible licensing. BricsCAD Pro and BricsCAD Platinum are cost-effective and budget-friendly.
--Keith Denton, vice president of Business Development, Intergraph CADWorx & Analysis Solutions

*** Intergraph GT STRUDL® Analsyis & Design, Now on BricsCAD

And here is something closely related to the above release.

GT STRUDL® is Intergraph’s structural analysis and design modeling software is used by structural engineering professionals for concrete, steel, and reinforced concrete design of structures.

With GT STRUDL® now available on BricsCAD, a whole new platform for structural analysis and design opens up on BricsCAD. A new bridge has been built that links BricsCAD with multiple Intergraph platform products. Pre- and post-processing reporting of analysis and design data can now be directly done on BricsCAD while the GT STRUDL® engine does the core analysis and design jobs.

With CADWorkx® talking to BricsCAD, it was a given that other software from the Intergraph eco-system would also follow suit, else a broken link is enough to ruin the convenience of inter-operability and cross-exchange of data.

With BricsCAD trying to bridge the gaps by talking to third-party software that either imports data from it or exports data to it, the chain is now getting stronger. And Bricsys must continue this practice more and more to stay in the radar of design, enterprise and manufacturing software that are in the upstream or downstream part of the life-cycle.

There is convergence of design, manufacturing, non-engineering enterprise data and of course, the cloud. Many third-party BricsCAD developers have built customized interfaces to other design, ERP and manufacturing software. Building software interfaces to some of the leading names in design like Intergraph is surely going to help Bricsys be in the radar of the customers of these software. And that is as important for Bricsys today as is building new functionality in its core platform.

*** Here is what other bloggers had to say about the deal

** Randall Newton in

For years Bricsys has been building BricsCAD as a full-featured DWG editor, continually adding features to go beyond making it simply an AutoCAD clone but a worthwhile CAD tool that also happens to read/write the AutoCAD .dwg format with full fidelity. It is also working on a BIM version of BricsCAD meant to be an alternative to Autodesk Revit.

Bricsys could double its sales overnight and it would be the fiscal equivalent of a mosquito bite to Autodesk. What this new alliance makes clear is that software users appreciate options. In the world of CAD, AutoCAD has been the 800-pound gorilla for so long many companies think they have no option. Much like the days when you can’t get fired for buying IBM, AutoCAD has become a de facto standard in design.

Plant design represents approximately 15% of AutoCAD sales annually. The total revenue at stake here may be small by Autodesk’s standards, but it will be surprising if they don’t make a countermove in response.

It is a win-win for both companies. Intergraph PP&M (which will be rebranded as Hexagon PPM) gains a way to provide new seats of CADWorx Plant at a lower total cost. Bricsys gets a hearty endorsement from the leading vendor in the plant design space (according to ARC Advisory Group, an industry analysis firm).

Bricsys made changes to BricsCAD specifically to support CADWorx. In a special press-only event later this month, Bricsys will discuss this deal, and no doubt discuss what else might be up its sleeve.
